Discs get scratched all the time and there are 5 huge ways to prevent this from being a problem. Half the time, the problem is that the disc is dirty, but we think they are scratched. They are simple, but very helpful:

  • Wipe the back of the disk on your shirt or a towel. This will remove any dust if you disc is dirty rather than scratched.
  • Use Windex or a similar glass cleaner on the back of your disk and wipe it with a cloth.
  • Make a copy of the disc on your computer (assuming your device can play copies). Sometimes your device may not be able to read the CD as well as a computer can.
  • Buy a profession disc cleaning tool. These can be surprisingly cheap and overwhelmingly helpful. They work nearly every time and, while some high end models cost thousands of dollars, you can buy a cheap one for yourself for $25.
  • Don't get your discs scratched in the first place! Keep them inside sleeves or in their boxes. Leaving a disc out on a hard surface (or worse stacked directly on top of another disc) is just asking for a scratched disc. Keep them protected!
